At head office in Paris or at the 3,000 French stations where the company’s 4,700 employees work on operations and development with a variety of profiles in very different professions. Our activity includes eight main types of professions: Stations, Maintenance & Works, Digital & Technologies, Project development, AREP, Retail, Security and Support roles.

Maintenance & Works Professions

The establishments responsible for maintenance and works at stations have three main missions: project management support, project management and maintenance. To fulfil missions, SNCF Gares & Connexions employs some 1,500 people and is supported by different professions, starting with the closest one to the field, the Local Manager. As manager for a geographic area, they organise and plan the production. They are supported by one or two Operational Technicians responsible for technical support missions, security and logistics.

Another key link in the chain is the Works Manager who is responsible for fulfilment of the works and keeping to deadlines and costs. The Works Supervisor, a specialist in building or electricity, also ensures work goes smoothly at the sites. Finally, SNCF Gares & Connexions has many Operators, building specialists (plumbers, carpenters, civil engineers, etc.), but also and above all electricians. The recruitment offers mainly concern roles of electrician, works manager and works supervisor.

Professions at AREP

AREP is a multidisciplinary practice. It covers a very wide range of professions. There are architects of course but also urban planners, interior architects and designers who design station furniture, economists who assess the works and many engineers specialising in flows, acoustics, structures, temperature, networks, roadworks, etc. And even several researchers in engineering science and social sciences, including PhD students who are preparing their theses within project teams and innovation teams.

AREP also employs engineers who coordinate the various technical professions, rail project managers and BIM (Building Information Modelling) and methods engineers who coordinate the production of projects on 3D digital models. Within Parvis, the AREP Group’s project management support structure, there are also operations managers responsible for project management support and programmers who define specifications to respond to project management requirements.

Professions in Retail

A new concept for commerce

SNCF Retail & Connexions, a subsidiary of SNCF Gares & Connexions, develops commerce at stations by diversifying it and moving it upmarket. Its objective is to transform the stations into lively places to enrich the experience of passengers and also visitors and locals while maximising the revenue generated by fees charged to the businesses operating at the station. The professions within Retail are split into three main services: commercialisation, deployment and marketing.

The commercialisation has two missions: studies (defining the commercial potential of the stations and developing their spaces) and commercialisation in the true sense of the word (canvassing businesses, tenders and signing of contracts). The deployment service supports the company from the signing of the contract to the opening of the shop. Finally, the marketing and operations department are responsible for running marketing events to boost sales in store, creating new services and ensuring the implementation of quality standards when it comes to customer care.

Professions in Station Operations

Managing 15,000 train departures and 10 million passengers on a daily basis is a huge challenge. On a daily basis, SNCF Gares & Connexions employees ensure that stations are running smoothly. Four new professions are in charge of supervising this: Platform Manager, Passenger Information Management, Site Manager and Station Service Manager. The Platform Manager manages flows, technical preparation, cleanliness and punctuality of trains.

They also ensure the quality of service provided to passengers. The Passenger Information Manager manages announcements and displays at stations. The Site Manager checks that equipment is functioning correctly (escalators, displays, automatic doors, cleanliness, etc.). Finally, the Station Service Manager is responsible for ensuring the quality of different services offered at stations: disabled passenger assistance, luggage lockers, lost & found, etc.

Digital & Technologies professions

The station is a physical place with lots of different professions that need to work together. Each needs mobile, high-performance and robust IT tools. The Digital & Technologies department ensures that these tools are working, listens to all of the users and comes up with the tools of tomorrow by making use of opportunities from technological advances. These tasks are done by 3 types of workers. The Tech Expert (Data, CRM, IT urban planner, IT architect, etc.) comes up with how the new technologies may be used in our IT system.

They may help to design or prototype projects in order to validate the feasibility. The Tech Team manager ensures that the conditions are right in order for the IT projects to be successful (technical skills, agile organisations and dialogue between the different professions). The Tech Project Manager leads the implementation project. They ensure that deadlines are met, spending is correct and the quality of the delivered product is right. They need to be agile as they may fulfil the role of Product Owner, Scrum Master or Lead Tech. The project manager’s everyday work also includes ensuring that apps and services are running well.
