Intermodality is part of our history. SNCF Gares & Connexions supports the changing uses by developing infrastructure that fosters low-carbon modes of transport.

Stations at the heart of intermodality
Climate targets require re-thinking the mobility modes of the French population. In 2021, the transport sector accounted for nearly 30% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in France. Intermodality is one of the main ways of encouraging changes in usage and reducing the use of private cars.
Today, train stations are a strategic link to develop "last mile" intermodality: 70% of French people live less than 5km from a station, and 90% live less than 10km from a station. At the same time, 60% of commuting trips under 5km are made by car, compared with just 5% by bicycle (INSEE, 2021).
Intermodality is at the core of our expertise.
Intermodality is one of SNCF Gares & Connexions' missions, entrusted to us by the law for a New Rail Pact of 27 June 2018. The law now reinforces our role and provides for creating or adapting multimodal interchange hubs around train stations to connect territories better.
SNCF Gares & Connexions has developed comprehensive expertise in designing a transport offer around the train station, conceived as the hub of the local transport master plan. Our teams are organised to offer local authorities tailor-made solutions adapted to the realities of the local public transport offer.

The SNCF Gares & Connexions cycling plan
Systematic extension of bicycle parking spaces near stations is one of SNCF Gares & Connexions' priorities to develop train/bike intermodality and offer everyone an end-to-end eco-friendly transport solution.
The French Law on Mobility (LOM) and the decree on secured cycle parking in the vicinity of stations set a target of more than 65,000 bike parking spaces in the 1,075 busiest stations by the end of 2024. By 2024, 65,000 secured cycle parking spaces will have been installed in nearly 1,100 stations. By 2030, there will be 90,000 such spaces, in addition to non-secured spaces.
- In the Île-de-France region: 164 cycle parks (closed, secured and free access) operated by SNCF Gares & Connexions and accessible to cyclists in 110 stations in the Île-de-France region, i.e. 5,418 parking spaces.
- At major stations: By the time of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we will have installed more than 2,600 new bicycle parking spaces, including the creation of a secure bicycle parking facility with 1,186 spaces at Paris Nord and a secure parking facility with 358 spaces at Paris Saint-Lazare.
