Strengthening regional interconnection

Metropolitan Regional Express Services (SERM) aim to ensure the intermodality and a high frequency of service in France's major metropolises, decarbonise travel, and offer high-quality services. SERM should help relieve congestion in France's major cities and open up their outskirts.

An expert in intermodality, SNCF Gares & Connexions is working alongside local authorities to develop stations as mobility hubs between all modes of transport (train, tram, bus, bike, car, taxi, etc.) to improve the quality of service in metropolitan areas.

Intermodality booster

SERMs are multimodal services that accommodate all types of transport. In the areas where they are deployed, they are built around the train service to encourage a massive shift from private car use to public transport.

Development of soft mobility

SERMs are helping to develop soft mobility by simplifying travel by bike, train, bus, or on foot, and leveraging the proximity of a large portion of the population to a train station. To support this development, 65,000 secured bicycle parking spaces will be installed by 2024. By 2030, there will be 90,000 such spaces, in addition to non-secured spaces.

Service projects

SERM projects are not limited to infrastructure only; they are also service-related projects. The aim is to provide a comprehensive and diversified transport offering. SERMs will improve the quality of service by increasing capacity, traffic flows and safety at stations.
